Characteristics

The alga are found just below mea lwtide level, growing attached to calcium encrusted basaltee rocks in the intertidal region. It usually grows in the crevices between rocks or in the lee side of the rocks shielded from wave action

The plants are short with short stalk ranged from 1.08 mm to 3-7 mm in length and about 400µ in diameter, rugose, gradually tapering towards the base and ending in a much branched rhizoidal system.

The rhizoids are 100 - 125µ broad. The stalk is surrounded by a circular, flat or umbrella like crown, 1.97 mm to 3.15mm in diameter and consisting of 15 - 17 subcoalescent cystosporangial rays. Each ray is 0.67 mm to 1.3 mm long, 0.29 mm to 0.5 mm broad at the rounded distal end and 0.14 mm to 0.16 mm wide at the narrower base.

The superior corona alone is present and consists of 15 - 17 knob-shaped segments 70 -90 µ in diameter. Each coronal knob bears a circular roup of 5-6 hai scars indicating the places of attachment of the deciduous hairs
